Sympathy and solidarity with earthquake victims in Turkiye and Syria

The Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) is deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that hit Turkiye and Syria on 6th February 2023. Our hearts go out to all the victims of this earthquake, and our solidarity is with all the brave rescuers who are risking their lives to save people.

Now is the time for the international community to put aside their differences and work together to help in the rescue, relief and recovery efforts in Turkiye and Syria.

It is very troubling to learn that the Turkish forces are still conducting military strikes in northern Syria despite this catastrophe. The ongoing Turkish military operation targeting the Kurdistan region is definitely hindering the rescue and relief efforts in the region.

Furthermore sanctions imposed by the US and European countries on Syria are hampering aid and assistance to reach the affected areas struck in Syria.

Hence, we call for the following:

  • Turkiye must end its military aggression on the Kurdistan region;
  • US and European countries should lift sanctions on Syria in order to allow the very much needed aid and assistance to reach the earthquake victims in the country.
