Malaysia’s rank in Climate Change Performance Index is disappointing

Malaysia has been steadily dropping in the Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI) ranking from 39th place in 2016 place to 56th place in 2021.

CCPI evaluates the performance in addressing climate change of 57 nations and the European Union. The nations that are ranked are responsible for 90% of global greenhouse (GHG) emissions.

Thus about a quarter of countries in the world including Malaysia are responsible for 90% of GHG emissions.

Malaysia’s CCPI ranking is extremely disappointing as its shows the lack of political will and action to curtail absolute carbon emissions.

The 2021 Federal Budget was a great example of how Perikatan Nasional failed to meet peoples’ aspiration for green recovery.

There was no mention of any revolutionary ideas from Budget 2021 to build a more resilient and environment-friendly Malaysia.

Malaysia needs to declare climate emergency to end this “business as usual” mindset immediately.
