PSM wishes to express concern and solidarity for striking workers of the NagaWorld casino in Cambodia who have been arrested and intimidated by Cambodian authorities since they went on strike in December 2021 to protest against the arbitrary mass lay-off of casino workers, reportedly from the adverse impact of COVID-19 on the casino business.
Freedom of expression and job security are enshrined in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) but the livelihoods of these workers have not been sufficiently taken into consideration by both NagaWorld, a Malaysian-owned company, and Cambodian authorities who have chosen to side with the business rather than the working class.
PSM is also very concerned that yet another Malaysian-owned company is making headlines over poor worker treatment, reaffirms its support for the striking NagaWorld workers and urges the Cambodian government to stop all arrests and intimidation of NagaWorld workers while addressing the root cause of the strike in the first place – the loss of livelihood.
