Don’t rule out overworked personnel & austerity measures in LRT accident investigation

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) needs to conduct a comprehensive and transparent investigation on the root cause of the Kelana Jaya LRT line accident.

Undeniably, Malaysia’s public transport infrastructure is seriously underfunded in terms of operational cost leading to poor working conditions and asset reliability.

Over the past decades, several austerity measures had been imposed by the federal government onto RapidKL . The impact of these austerity measures is visible from the broken escalators, elevators, toilet flushes and roofs throughout the public transport system.

The element of human error due overworked personnel must be investigated. Malaysia is the fourth most overworked country1. This includes workers in government agencies such RapidKL2.

The manually driven LRT had been mistakenly inserted into the wrong trackway by the central control centre. Overworked personnel are prone to make more errors and mistakes.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) urges the Ministry of Transport (MOT) not to rule out the impact of overworked personnel and austerity measures in the investigations of the Kelana Jaya LRT accident.

Thoroughly investigating and understanding the conditions leading to equipment and human errors is crucial to prevent disastrous accidents in the future.

Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) would like to express our deepest appreciation to the emergency rescue workers for their swift rescue efforts.
