Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) is deeply concerned over the latest political development in Myanmar. We strongly condemn the unfolding military coup that involves the detention of the State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and other political leaders from the ruling party, dissolution of the Assembly of the Union, suspension of the Constitution and declaration of a state of emergency.
Despite the many flaws of Aung San Suu Kyi’s administration for the last five years in power, including the failure in addressing the genocidal repression of the Rohingya people in Rakhine State, there is no ground can justify a military coup.
The current military coup is a push back of the hard won limited democratic space for the people of Myanmar after a long and painful struggle for democratization.
The Myanmar’s military must handover its power back to the people and their democratic-elected representatives.
We also urge the ASEAN to suspend the membership of Myanmar in ASEAN until a civilian government is restored. We should not tolerate any authoritarian rule of military junta in the region.
